A56 Accrington Bypass was closed in both directions due to a serious accident that occurred around midday today.
- Location: The closure is between the A679 Burnley Road (Accrington) and the A680 Blackburn Road (Rising Bridge Roundabout, Rising Bridge).
- Impact: A person suffered serious injuries in the two-vehicle crash and was hospitalized. Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were at the scene.
- Status: The road remains closed as of late afternoon, with traffic being turned around within the closure. Significant congestion has been reported along the northbound A56 and surrounding local routes.

M66 Incident (Affecting A56 Traffic)
Earlier in the day, a separate crash on the M66 southbound near junction 1 also caused significant delays and affected traffic on the A56.
- Location: M66 southbound before J1 A56 Walmersley Road (Ramsbottom).
- Impact: The incident involved two cars and happened shortly before 9am. One person with minor injuries had to be cut free from a vehicle by firefighters.
- Status: The M66 was partially blocked, and traffic queued back onto the A56 at Haslingden as drivers tried to avoid the collision. The incident has since cleared, but the separate accident on the A56 Bypass is the major ongoing issue.
