Serving as a parish pastor in several Illinois congregations over many years.
Holding important leadership positions within LCMS:
President of the LCMS Central Illinois District (1985–1995).
First Vice President of LCMS (from 1995).
11th President of LCMS — he assumed the presidency in 2001 following the sudden death of his predecessor.
Later, Vice President of the East‑Southeast Region of LCMS.
He continued to serve on synod boards and committees for decades, contributing substantially to theological leadership, church governance, and support of seminarians and congregations.
In addition to official duties, many remember him as a pastor deeply committed to his faith, his congregants, and mentoring church leaders.

He married Judith Mittenzwey on June 8, 1963.
According to his obituary notice, he is survived by three children, nine grandchildren, and twelve great‑grandchildren.

Memorial services were held in his honor in Oviedo, Florida on March 14, 2025, and another in Bath, Illinois on March 28, 2025, giving both local and broader church communities an opportunity to say farewell.
His family has established a memorial fund in his and his wife’s name to support seminarians — ensuring that his commitment to ministry and faith continues to influence future generations.
